Why hello there!

I just wanted to pop in and introduce myself. My name is Damaris and I'm a Senior at Notre Dame de Namur University majoring in English and Political Science, with a minor in Africana Studies. Now to be quite honest, I'm unsure as to what I will do with my degree-I've always aspired to become a civil rights attorney, but the prospects of being a teacher, policy analyst, or working for a non-profit are also in consideration. As for my personal life, I'm quite a humble soul who enjoys the simpler things in life. A good cup of coffee, positive energy, and good music is all that I need. In addition,  I'm quite the quirky Black woman as I rock a 70's Afro, drive a Mini Cooper, and watch a tad bit too much anime. So long story short, I'm a chill person who thrives for Social Justice.

Now let's discuss why I'm here: I was interested in taking this course to get a better understanding as to how and why American politics function the way they do. For instance, last year I had the opportunity to be on a panel with then Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders. We were told that there will be a short meet and greet, followed by walking onto the stage, and talking about why there's a need for free college/canceling student debt. I was so excited but quickly realized that it all felt like a show. The cameras, cool little venue, and loud crowds didn't feel genuine-more like a celebrity event. And if it's not these little events, we see these campaign trails of promises that are not hardly met so I want to know why this happens. And hey, maybe I choose to run as a District Leader or senator in the future, I can only hope that this course gives me the insight to succeed.

So, I look forward to this semester and plenty of discussions!
